Perak Turf Club - PREVIEW FOR 2020 G1 PERAK DERBY

PREVIEW FOR 2020 G1 PERAK DERBY

The longest race on the Malaysian turf calendar, the 2400m G1 Perak Derby (RM200,000) will headline the marathon 12-race program at PRTC on Sunday.

An enthralling battle is expected as D’GREAT TIMING and DAVINCI, who both ran the quinella in the race last year, return and are set to clash again. Dual Group One winner, SACRED EMPIRE is in career best form and is searching to add another feature to the trophy cabinet while BLACK THORN, demoted on protest in the Penang Governors Gold Cup, aims to break the Group One hoodoo which has eluded him at his past three starts.

PROFILE FOR RUNNERS IN THE 2020 PERAK DERBY

D'GREAT TIMING defeats BLACK THORN in the G1 Piala Emas in KL

1.D’GREAT TIMING has maintained his sparkling form since last year’s victory, going on to win to win the G1 Piala Emas in September and was unlucky in the Penang Governors Gold Cup last month. The only query is he will be carrying 6 kg more compared to his 2019 success and his record with high weights (58+) is not inspiring. Still has the class to be a major player.

 SACRED EMPIRE

2.SACRED EMPIRE is currently in career best form and is aiming for his third Group One victory in the space of three months. Looks well weighted and has matured into a fine stayer. The 7yo has failed once previously over the 2400m in New Zealand which is the only query for the gelding but he still looks the testing material.

3.ROYAL EXPLORER finished 3rd in the 2000m G1 Piala Emas before failing in the 1600m G1 Coronation Cup and hasn’t started since. Best form is over the mile and it appears a big ask to resume at the 2400m. Has early speed but draws the outside gate so requires early luck also.

4.BLACK THORN continues to chase that elusive G1 victory which was taken away from him in the Penang Governors Gold Cup two weeks ago. Despite stepping up to the 2400m for the first time, the 6yo possesses one of the quickest sprints in the country and is bred to stay. Has a big chance at the weights.

 DAVINCI

5.DAVINCI finished a narrow 2nd in the race last year and is entering Sunday’s feature with a reasonable form line. Closed off well in the Governors Gold Cup and carries the same weight as last year. Another smart sit sprinter which is a definite trifecta chance.

6.SHOQEET is relatively inexperienced at this level and was safely held in the G1 Piala Emas in September. Has come close to winning a couple of high grade races recently and could be a longshot chance at his first run over the journey.

 HONG CHEN

7.HONGCHEN is a handy Class 3 performer who finished midfield in the G1 Coronation Cup, his only run at Group level. May be a touch below in this grade but is capable of running into the placings.

8.KING WIN has been one of the most progressive gallopers over the past six months and showed he was up to this class with an encouraging 4th in the Coronation Cup. The 5yo is coming off a 1700m win against inferior opposition at Penang a fortnight ago and is holding his form on the training track.

 NOT USUAL PRINCE

9.NOT USUAL PRINCE has only won twice in his career but will develop into a handy performer for connections. Scored in an Open Novice and did not disgrace in the recent Penang contest won by KING WIN.  Will attract some support with the lightweight and has placed up to 2040m in New Zealand.

10.CALVADOS was well beaten in the 2000m G1 Piala Emas and looks tested against this opposition. His only career win was an Open Novice back in August and the distance may see him out also.

11.SING EXPRESS goes into the Derby second up and is coming off an unplaced effort in a Penang Class 4 event. Hard to see him cutting the mustard against this Derby line up.
