EARLY SCRATCHINGS AND BEST BETS

As is the norm, the Malaysian racing season will commence with the Perak Derby meeting this weekend featuring two days of racing with 16 races in total. The Class 4 and Class 5 runners have been catered for on both days plus a Maiden to kick off Saturday’s card of racing at 1.55pm. The simulcast coverage will be coming from Singapore (11 Races from 1.15pm) on Saturday while the cross current meeting on Sunday will be televised from Sha Tin, Hong Kong (10 Races) from 12.15pm local time.

EARLY SCRATCHINGS:

SATURDAY: RACE 2 (3) MAGICAL TALENT; RACE 5 (4) ASTRA; RACE 6 (5) ALAN

SUNDAY: RACE 2 (12) PARAGON STAR

BEST BETS FROM THE MEDIA TIPSTERS

SATURDAY:

 POMP

IRACE media followers will have to be patient until the last event (Race 9) where the Shane Edwards trained POMP (3) should prove the one to beat. The 6yo scored over the 1100m here in August and has been freshened since finishing 2nd behind smart mare, Aljawhra over 1300m in KL. There looks to be some genuine pace in the race and from barrier 4, POMP should receive all the favours.

TURFGUIDE believe that ROSES FOR ME (4) can finally break the maiden tag in Race 3. The 5yo mare started even money favourite in Penang a fortnight ago and looked the winner at one stage before peaking over the last 25m to finish a narrow 2nd. The form line reads well for the mare after finishing a game 2nd to Ipoh Dash, who came out and won again at Class 4 company last weekend.

 DOCTOR GINGER

WINNER 21 are predicting that DOCTOR GINGER (2) can defy the class rise and cure the ills of punters in Race 8. The Kevin Coetzee trained galloper attracted market support in several starts during his 3yo campaign, which included an encouraging 4th in the Malaysia 3YO Championship Final back in June. The now 4yo broke through for a narrow win in KL over 1200m on December 7 and a back to back victory would not surprise.

SUNDAY:

 BIG BANK

IRACE media are wishing for punters to accumulate a BIG BANK in Race 4 as the Stephen Cook runner by the same name searches for a return to the winners stall with the 59kg in tow. The 6yo posted the one local victory when successful in KL back in August and has been far from disgraced in several Class 4 runs since then. BIG BANK (1) looked strong in the run to the line at Penang two weeks ago and looks hard to beat at his second start back in Class 5 grade.

 SHANGHAI NIGHTS

TURFGUIDE are confident that SHANGHAI NIGHTS (3) can replicate his last start performance by winning again in Race 2. The 4yo showed early glimpses of his potential when winning his maiden in August and was placed in Class 4 company here in October. Even though SHANGHAI NIGHTS dominated a Class 5 line up in KL winning by 7 lengths last start, the gelding does have the tendency to be hesitant at the start which does cost him ground at barrier rise.

 XENA

WINNER 21 are confident that punters can be sent home on a winning note when 3yo filly, XENA (3) has the ability to overcome the outside gate to win Race 7. The youngster with 1 win and 4 placings from 6 starts has chased home a couple of handy gallopers in recent times including the unbeaten Myo and promising performer Selangor Star. Premiership jockey HS Gill rides XENA for the first time on Sunday.
