PREVIEW FOR G1 GOLD VASE ON SUNDAY

With further rainfall occurring in the Kinta Valley during the week, a wet track is most likely for the two days of racing at PRTC this weekend highlighted by the 2nd Heat of the Malaysia 3YO Championship (RM100,000) run over 1200m and the Group One Perak Gold Vase (RM150,000) to be run on Sunday down the 1100m straight course.

 VOLCANIC GENERAL

Malaysia’s highest rated galloper VOLCANIC GENERAL will be targeting his fourth Group One victory as he attempts to atone for his narrow defeat in this race last year. The 6yo is coming off a luckless 5th in the Selangor Gold Cup (G1) last start following his success on protest in the Tunku Gold Cup (G1) in April. The grey no doubt has the class on his side and should prove hard to beat despite carrying top weight of 59kg.

 MR NEVERMIND

Talented gelding MR NEVERMIND has been working well and will be a major stumbling block for the horse he beat home by 1.75 lengths in the Tunku Gold Cup before being demoted to 2nd when the protest was upheld. MR NEVERMIND once again has the advantage with the pull in the weights (52kg) and has rapidly risen through the classes posting 3 wins and 2 placings in 5 local starts.

 VERBAL LINK

VERBAL LINK has been another progressive galloper in recent months with 4 wins from 11 Malaysian starts and was a winner down the straight course earlier this year. The 5yo grey is a versatile type who finished on the heels of the place getters in the Selangor Gold Cup (G1) last start and has drawn towards the outside where he can utilise his early pace and should be prominent for a long way.

 TIDAL WAVE

KL trainer Frank Maynard has trained 3 of the past 4 Gold Vase winners and has two genuine chances from the stable. The ultra consistent TIDAL WAVE will be on the seven day back up after finishing 3rd to PISCES STAR down the straight and is always one for the trifecta. D’GREAT CONQUEROR, who was placed in the 2017 Penang Sprint Trophy (G1), will be looking to make amends following his failure in the Selangor Gold Cup.

Light weight chances can be given to WOW and LIM’S CASINO who are making their Group One debuts. WOW was in career best form last year which included a winning hat trick and a rapid progress to Class 3 company. The 9yo is a fast beginner and was back in winning form last start defeating talented 4yo Panda Bomb second up from a spell.

LIM’S CASINO produced a sterling finish when resuming from a nine month break when runner up to the smart Relau Star in KL. The 5yo was competitive at Class 4 level in Singapore and should pick up a race in the near future.

Triple Group One winner TRUSON can never be left out of calculations and was flashing home late to finish 3rd in the Selangor Gold Cup. The drop back to 1100m may be a fraction short for the 6yo nowadays but he was runner up in this race two years ago.
