G1 PERAK GOLD VASE PREVIEW

KL trainer, FRANK Maynard has won two of the last three Perak Gold Vases and will go into Sunday’s Group One feature with two genuine chances, including last year’s winner IMPEL.

 IMPEL

The 7yo is perhaps not in the same vein of form he was prior to last year’s edition when he dominated to win by 3 lengths with 59kg. the duel Group One winner still has class on his side and former premiership jockey, Jackson Low rides the horse for the first time.

 INDIAN JADE

Maynard’s other representative is the inform INDIAN JADE, which has won 2 from 4 local starts. The versatile 7yo was unplaced in the Gp1 Selangor Gold Cup where he found the mile a fraction too far but both his 1200m victories in high grade KL races were impressive and he draws on the right side of the track for visiting jockey, Shankar Muniandy.

VOLCANIC GENERAL will travel outstation for the first time but is all class following his Tunku Gold Cup (G1) victory in February and his narrow defeat in the Selangor Gold Cup (G1) in April. Although the striking 5yo grey has been starved of racing opportunities this year, trainer Charles Leck will have the horse fully prepared and looks to be on target and looks well after winning a trial on his home track recently.

The ever reliable TRUSON was runner up in this race last year and gains an advantage also with an outside draw. The Coronation Cup winner has placed in four other Group One events and hasn’t started since powering home for 3rd in the Selangor Gold Cup on April 16. The 5yo has a good record when produced fresh and Firman Yap, who rode Big Lightning to 3rd this race last year, rides TRUSON for the first time.

The interesting runner is 2015 Vase winner, BALOTELLI who is on the comeback trail from injury and will be having his first start for 15 months. The 6yo was given a quiet trial on Wednesday for his return. The two time Group One winner has not raced since finishing unplaced in the 2016 Selangor Gold Cup.

Promising 4yo SHOWBOY looks best of the lightweight chances with 51 kg, a drop of 8.5kg from his last start placing in KL. With 5 wins from 11 starts, SHOWBOY gains a big weight advantage on most of his more experienced rivals and some perform well coming off a short break.

The KL Chong pair of STAR QUALITY and BRAVE MALALA have been in terrific form this year and should also be considered. STAR QUALITY has placed in 3 Group Ones and is back in form while the mare, BRAVE MALALA is still a query in this class but is currently racing in career best form.

The Turfguide selection is Penang visitor, WORLD HARMONY which has raced only once in Ipoh previously and that was when he finished 4th in the Gold Vase last year behind IMPEL. The 6yo has placed once in 5 tries at Gp1 level and should start at handy odds.
